I agree with you that...Thank you for your question. I agree with you that the Mishnah in Yoma (37a) does say that the nivreshes was "above the Heychal entrance." This could mean that it was above the Heychal doors, although there was also a golden grapevine above these doors (Middos 3:8) which was presumably there first (before Heleni came along) so the nivreshes would have to be higher up on the wall than the grapevine. As for the curtain being open, I don't know that they opened it all the way, or even at all, but probably the Kohanim just pushed past it when they went in and out. If they did open it, they would have had to open it quite a ways in order to allow the light of the sun to strike the nivreshes. Also, the sunlight would be blocked by the eastern wall of the Azarah (which was at least 40 amos high) in the beginning of the day.
I based my pictures on Tiferes Yisrael §62 to Yoma 3:10 and his Beis Hamikdash Diagram §61 where he writes that the nivreshes was placed on the roof of the Ulam opposite the Heychal entrance.
If you haven't already, check out my latest slideshow where I discuss this topic. This is how it sounds from the gemora in Yuma
I am aware that the Rav's understanding makes sense given that the nivreshes was a siman for zman krias shma, but since the ulam paroches is open, light will still reach the nivreshes on the inside.
Can the Rav clarify?
Thank you
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-520998016026184160.post-57899805686714910212016-04-25T05:12:38.360-04:002016-04-25T05:12:38.360-04:00Interesting.Interesting.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16087722097001278096noreply@blogger.com
